Review: "Weekend With Pablo Picasso" / by Lorraine Garcia-Nakata

Just witnessed, “A Weekend with Pablo Picasso,” written/performed by our Herbert Siguenza presented by San Diego Rep. Theatre. By now we’ve experienced many adaptations of otherwise on-stage performances on line with varying degree of success. This solo piece works in its filmed format, as the technical aspects are on point, and musical guitar and bass lines hover without piercing the moments. Primarily a solo performance, Herbert breathes in and out a soliloquy that is philosophical, historical, editorial, intentional, tactile and perceptive. As an artist, I connect to descriptions of the unknown territory you enter as you begin a truly creative process. “A painting is never decided beforehand. You must have an idea, but it should be a vague idea,” his character shares. Art as a regenerating process, he states, “Art washes away the dust of everyday life on my soul.” Probably the line that resounds most about the deep dive an artist makes, is his statement that “hidden harmony is better than the obvious.” You have to be still, dig, work, open up and trust the process to achieve this and I personally love that process. Herbert does it regularly. Ultimately his message is, “You have to have the courage to answer your calling.” My kids have heard that message many times. This is Herbert Siguenza, theatre, wit, relevance, and pandemic on-line artistry at its best. Buy your ticket to inspiration today. It is available for viewing from September 17 through October 14, 2020. –Lorraine García-Nakata, 9-17-2020
